Ducati vs Yamaha: A History
Ducati and Yamaha are big names in motorcycles, but they’re not the oldest. In fact, that’s one thing they have in common. They only took the stage (at least as motorcycle brands) in the aftermath of World War II.
Ducati
It was the 1940s for Ducati. This phoenix of a brand rose from the ashes of post-war Italy (look at the plumage of that stunning Rosso red livery!) to introduce a new way to travel. Ducati created a “Cucciolo” engine that could be mounted on bicycles—and eventually, completely motorized bikes.
Yamaha
Yamaha came to the table in the 1950s under the direction of Genichi Kawakami. Their first bike was the YA-1, a 125cc motorcycle that won the 3rd Mount Fuji Ascent Race in its class. And thus, the company’s reputation for motorsports and performance was born! They continue to cultivate it to this day.
Ducati vs Yamaha: The Bikes
Ducati and Yamaha have interesting stories to tell of their past. But what do their motorcycles look like today? Let’s see how they compare.
Ducati Motorcycles
Both brands have vast and varied lineups. Ducati’s desmodromic engines are fine-tuned for performance, and the brand has a healthy line of high-performing bikes. We’re talking major names like:
- Ducati Panigale
- Ducati SuperSport
- Ducati Streetfighter
The brand also dabbles in off-road motorcycles. The Ducati Multistrada is the most high-tech, most powerful Italian adventure bike currently in production!
Yamaha Motorcycles
Yamaha motorcycles lean more into the off-road side of things. Perhaps that’s not surprising, because the brand also produces snowmobiles and ATVs. Their line includes trail, cross country, dual sport, and motocross bikes that feel at home off the beaten path.
Of course, with sport and touring motorcycles as well, Yamaha makes sure those who prefer the pavement find what they’re looking for. Their lineup has included:
- Yamaha V Star 250 Sport Heritage
- Yamaha Tracer 9 GT Sport Touring
- Yamaha YZF-R3 Supersport
